Zande (Azande) “Double Presence” Protective Figure, Congo / Central African Republic

$400.00

A powerful, compact Zande (Azande) - figure from the Ubangi–Uele cultural sphere (NE Congo / Central African Republic border region), carved with the kind of bold, intentional geometry collectors love: squared feet, muscular legs, and a strong vertical stance that makes this small work feel monumental in the hand.

What immediately sets this piece apart is its rare “double presence” design—an upper head rising above a second, mask-like face integrated into the torso. This isn’t decoration; it’s visual language. In the region, doubling often signals expanded awareness and protective power—a figure who “sees” more than the ordinary world. That idea is reinforced by the most striking detail: bright, ringed metal inlaid eyes (copper/brass alloy) that create an unmistakable, watchful stare. It’s the kind of feature you see on objects meant to work—spiritually— guard, strengthen, and protect—rather than on carvings made simply to please the eye.

Carved from dense, heavy hardwood, the surface shows a deep, well-aged patina with honest variation: darker, more oxidized tones in protected areas and visible hand-tool finishing beneath the feet and between the legs, where makers focused their efforts on the forms that mattered most. The figure reads as androgynous yet subtly male, a common Central African visual strategy that emphasizes life force and vitality while keeping the object universal—protective of the whole household or lineage, not just one person.

The condition is strong and display-ready. There is a stable age crack in the right leg, consistent with natural wood movement over time, and the sculpture is mounted on a new, high-quality walnut base for clean presentation. The red bead earrings are later additions (the beads are old), applied as embellishment—an easily reversible choice depending on collector preference.

Works with this “double being” configuration and metal inlays are strongly sought after because they combine sculptural modernism with authentic regional symbolism—an object that looks extraordinary on a shelf and even better once you know what it was made to do: stand guard. Custom base included.

Condition: Good. Stable crack at right leg.

Dimensions: Overall with base 11.25 × 3.25 × 3 inches; Figure only 8 × 3 × 2.25 inches (H x W x D)
