Chokwe Female Figure, Angola / Democratic Republic of the Congo Border Region
This Chokwe (Tchokwe) female figure represents an example of figural sculpture from northeastern Angola or adjacent Chokwe regions, likely carved in the mid-20th century. At first glance, the presence is unmistakable. The tall, architectural coiffure—intricately cross-hatched and banded—was not simply a hairstyle, but a marker of identity, refinement, and social standing. Among the Chokwe, hair signified discipline and cultural pride; here it crowns the figure like a headdress of authority. The face is calm and introspective, with gently lowered almond-shaped eyes and full, composed lips. There is no theatrical expression—only controlled strength and quiet self-possession.
The body carries symbolic meaning as well. The scarification patterns carved into the shoulders and torso reference beauty, lineage, and adulthood. The breasts are firm and prominent, a celebration of fertility and continuity. The slightly bent knees and grounded stance give the figure a subtle sense of readiness—as if poised between the spiritual and the earthly realms. Figures of this type typically represented an idealized female ancestor or cultural heroine and were kept within the household or lineage compound, where they served as symbols of continuity, moral instruction, and ancestral presence rather than as public display objects.
Importantly, the surface tells its own story. The deep, warm patina has developed naturally over time, with soft wear on the breasts, thighs, and knees from handling and age. Tool marks remain visible in protected areas, confirming hand carving rather than modern machine production. The vertical age crack running through the head and torso is consistent with decades of natural wood movement and remains stable—an honest testament to time rather than damage. There are no signs of artificial aging or decorative shortcuts.
Stylistically and materially, the figure aligns with authentic Chokwe village production rather than later tourist carvings. Custom base included.
Condition: Good. Vertical cracks run through the head and torso.
Dimensions: (Height x Width x Depth) Overall 19 × 6 × 6 inches; Figure only 16.5 × 4.5 × 4.5 inches
