Guro-Yaure Portrait Mask with Female Figure, Côte d’Ivoire
Guro / Yaure Portrait Mask with Female Figure
Côte d’Ivoire
Wood, pigment
Approx. early to mid-20th century
Height: 20 inches (50.8 cm) mask only
This striking Guro / Yaure portrait mask from Côte d’Ivoire combines elegance, age, and strong sculptural presence. The long, refined face is crowned by a standing female figure, turning the work from a simple mask into a complete sculptural composition. With its calm expression, lustrous surface, and commanding vertical silhouette, it is the kind of African carving that immediately captures attention.
Masks of this type were created for performance, ceremony, and social display, often expressing ideals of beauty, dignity, status, and cultivated presence. The face is not a literal portrait, but an idealized image of grace and inner strength, seen in the narrowed eyes, composed mouth, and balanced features. The female figure above adds further meaning, suggesting fertility, prestige, lineage, and the importance of women within the region’s visual language.
Especially appealing is the mask’s balance of strength and restraint. The facial structure is clean and powerful, yet never harsh. The warm brown surface has developed a deep, varied patina through age and handling, while pale accents around the eyes create contrast and focus. The carved border and pierced rim preserve evidence of original use, and the superstructure figure gives the whole work a rising, almost architectural energy.
From a collector’s standpoint, this piece offers the qualities most sought after in older African carving: real age, honest wear, sculptural sophistication, and exceptional display value. The surface has a rich, settled sheen, and the interior wear and oxidized back support age and handling. An old crack to the left rim is noted for accuracy, but reads as part of the mask’s authentic life rather than a distraction.
A superb and highly decorative West African portrait mask, combining the serenity of an idealized face with the added power of a female superstructure. Equally compelling in a serious collection or as a single statement piece in an interior. Custom stand included.
Condition: Good. Old crack on the left side of the rim.
Dimensions: (Height x Width x Depth) Overall with stand 23.5 × 6 × 5.25 inches; Mask only 20 × 6 × 5 inches
